This leather jacket, also known as the HARTMANN "Hartmann style," was worn by pilots of the Nazi German Air Force (LUFTWAFFE) in the 1940s.


A vintage 1940s French cycling jacket. This civilian jacket was used as a cycling and motorcycle jacket before the war.

When the German army occupied France during World War II, it confiscated various supplies and used these garments as substitutes. This jacket in particular was purchased by a few pilots at their own expense, and was subsequently purchased in large quantities by the military for use as flight clothing. In this case, the national eagle was attached to the chest and rank insignia was attached to the shoulders using special tabs sewn on them.

Unlike cold-weather leather flight suits such as the Canal/Channel jackets produced in Germany and Bulgaria, these lightweight leather jackets were often repurposed motorcycle jackets from occupied territories such as France at the time.


Since these civilian jackets are often repurposed products produced in occupied territories, they come in a variety of specifications and colors. In recent years, it is rare to find original Nazi German flight suits with the original epaulettes and Adler slogans from that time, and many have been removed after the war or have been replaced by jackets from the military. These jackets are often found in pre-sale condition.

The jacket we acquired this time is approximately a US size 40. This jacket is rare, even throughout the year, but when it is, it seems that the majority of jackets are around sizes 34 or 36. Furthermore, because it is made from cape skin, which is inherently fragile, it is extremely difficult to find a larger size that is suitable for wear and in good condition.

The leather appears to be sheepskin. The color is brown.

The leather is in very good condition. The lining is wool. The inner sleeve fabric is rayon. The main zipper is made by ECLAIR. The zipper works without any problems. The zippers on the pockets are also in their original condition. The front zipper has been repaired.

1940年代　ナチスドイツ空軍(LUFTWAFFEパイロットが着用したいわゆるHARTMANN　”ハルトマンスタイル”　とも呼ばれるレザージャケット。

ヴィンテージ　1940年代のフランス製のサイクリングジャケット。この民生用のジャケットは戦前から自転車用やモーターサイクル用のジャケットとして使用されていたものです。

第二次世界大戦に入り、ドイツ軍フランスが占領されるとドイツ軍によってさまざまな物資が接収されますが、こういった被服も代用品として使用されます。なかでもこのジャケットは一部のパイロットが自費で購入したのをきっかけに、軍によって大量に購入され飛行服として使用されました。この場合は胸に国家鷲章を取り付け、肩には階級章が専用タブを縫い付け取り付けられました。


このように軽量レザージャケットは、カナール/チャネルジャケット等のドイツやブルガリアで生産された防寒用のレザー製飛行服とは違い、当時のフランス等の占領地のモーターサイクルジャケットを転用した物が多く見られます。


このような民生品ジャケットは占領地における生産品の転用品が多いため、様々な仕様やカラーのものが存在します。近年ではナチスドイツ飛行服で当時の実物肩章やアドラーが付いたオリジナルが出てくることは稀で戦後に取り外された物や、支給以前の状態で見つかる場合が多くなっています。


今回入手したジャケットは、米国サイズでいいますと40程度にあたる個体です。このジャケットは、年間を通しても何度も見つかることはありませんが入手できる場合も、おおよそ34,36くらいのサイズが大多数であると感じます。さらに元来脆弱なケープスキン製のジャケットのため、コンディションも併せて着用に適した大き目のサイズを手に入れるのは非常に困難になっています。



レザーはシープスキンと思われます。カラーはブラウン。

レザーコンディションは非常に良好なコンディションを維持しています。ライニングはウール生地。袖の内側生地はレーヨン生地が使われています。メインジッパーはECLAIR製です。ジッパーの作動は異常のない状態です。ポケット部分のジッパーもオリジナルの状態となっています。フロントジッパーは修復歴がございます。
