Vintage R.A.F. Irvin Jacket

This is a quintessential Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) flying jacket from the 1940s. It features a deep brown color and sheepskin with a remarkably long pile. The sheepskin remains beautiful and robust—defying its age of over 70 years—a testament to the meticulous tanning process used in its creation.

While this specific jacket shows signs of use, the leather remains sturdy and the fur shows no significant shedding; overall, it is in relatively good condition.

It is a rare specimen that retains its original chain hanger loop—a feature often missing from surviving Irvin jackets—though the original collar strap and the label bearing the "Broad Arrow" mark are absent.

Many surviving Irvin jackets remain wearable today, likely due to the unique manufacturing processes of the era; despite the decades that have passed since the war, they are often still suitable for everyday wear. However, large numbers were consumed within the UK during the post-war period—particularly in the 1950s and 60s—making it increasingly difficult to find examples in truly excellent condition.

Finding one in a size suitable for the average Japanese wearer, as is the case with this item, is an exceptionally difficult collecting challenge. The outer shell is in excellent condition with minimal loss of finish, and the sheepskin shows very little shedding. The main zipper is an original period piece, though it lacks the "AM" stamp and royal markings.

The construction and specifications—such as the design of the zipper end—are far more robust and meticulously crafted than those of wartime American counterparts. It features the original chain-style hanger loop.

Please note that there is some missing seam tape, some peeling of the finish, and leather repairs have been performed by our shop; however, none of these issues hinder wearability.

1940年代の英国空軍R.A.F.を代表するフライングジャケット。濃いブラウンカラーでとても毛足の長いシープスキン。なめし工程の丁寧さからくるであろうと思われる、70年以上経過したとは思えないほど美しく堅牢なシープスキン。

本個体は使用感のあるコンディションではありますが、レザーは堅牢でありファーの抜けなども見られない比較的良好な個体です。

現存するIRVINジャケットの中でも現存していることの少ない、襟裏のオリジナルストラップ、ブロードアローマークのあるラベルは欠損していますが、チェーンハンガーループが残っている希少な個体です。

現存する多くのIRVINジャケットは着用に支障のない個体が多く、当時の工程に特徴があったのか戦後かなりの年月が経過しているのに、まだ十分に普段の生活環境で着用できるものが多いとも言えます。とはいえ、戦後特に50年代から60年代にかけては英国内で大量に消費されてしまって、極上と呼べる個体は少なくなっています。

ましてや本品のような日本人が着用できるサイズとなると蒐集は困難を極めます。外装シェルはフィニッシュ落ちも少なくとてもよいコンディションで、とても良いコンディションです。シープスキンの抜けも少ない逸品。メインジッパーはAM刻印と王室マーキングはありませんが当時のオリジナルの状態です。

ジッパーエンドの造りなど米国の戦中の物とは比較にならないほど堅牢で丁寧なつくりと仕様です。ハンガーループはチェーン型のオリジナル。

シームテープの一部欠損、一部のフィニッシュ剥がれ、弊店によるレザー補修がなされていますが着用には支障なく問題ございません。
